Shawnee Mission schools locked exterior doors and canceled outdoor activities Monday after a woman called police and said her son was upset and was possibly headed to a high school and might be armed.
The woman later called back a few minutes later and said her son had returned home and was not armed. Then she hung up. Police were unable to re-establish contact or confirm that a specific threat existed.
But as a precaution, officials at all Shawnee Mission schools locked all exterior doors Monday afternoon and kept students inside for recess and all athletics activities, said district spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal.
“We received information from the police about a vague threat about a possible shooting of a school,” Neal said. “So we took those precautions.”
A text alert sent to district parents said that students were kept inside for recess and physical education classes.
Classes were conducted normally through dismissal at the regular time Monday afternoon, but afternoon athletic practices were held indoors.
