JACKSONVILLE, Fla — I dont know if it was the euphoria of a winning locker room or the drastic change between this team and last years or just a professional athletes confidence but heres what Justin Houston said when I asked if he had a number in mind for sacks this season:
By SAM MELLINGER
The Kansas City Star
"I would love the break the (record). Im pretty sure every guy that rushes the passer is trying to get that goal. If I could do that, thats great, but Im just trying to do my job."
Houston did that on Sunday, leading a dominant defense in a 28-2 win over the Jaguars here.
Houston had three sacks, which is nearly half of the stupid over-under Bovada put on him for the season, and almost one-fourth of the smarter number The Totally Official DKTM Over-Under Challenge came up with.
That tied St. Louis Robert Quinn as the most of the day and puts Houston on a pace for 48 this season, small sample size and all that stuff.
Houston said those words amid a bit of chaos the Chiefs havent celebrated much recently so I wanted to make sure I heard him right.
The all-time sack record? Not Derrick Thomas team record of 20?
"Yeah man," Houston said. "The record. The record, man. The sack record. Twenty-two. Hey, you gotta dream big, man. Skys the limit."
Now, we should point out that the NFL record is actually 22 ½, set by Michael Strahan.
But maybe Houston was talking about Jared Allens and Mark Gastineaus Shared NFL Record For Those Who Didnt Get Brett Favre To Lay Down For Them of 22.
Either way, yeah. Those are big dreams.
