East Kansas League power rankings

1. BV West

Last season: 8-3 (5A quarterfinals)

The Jags are loaded for a run at the Class 5A championship.

2. Gardner Edgerton

Last season: 6-4 (6A playoffs)

Third-year starters Traevohn Wrench and Jared Hobby make a formidable backfield.

3. Blue Valley

Last season: 6-5 (5A quarterfinals)

Physical and filthy in the trenches, definitely a team with championship potential.

4. Bishop Miege

Last season: 7-6 (5A runner-up)

Keep an eye on quarterback Ryan Willis, a junior Olathe East transfer who’s been offered by Kansas State.

5. BV Northwest

Last season: 5-5 (6A playoffs)

Quietly poised for a strong season, a sleeper in the EKL ranks.

6. St. Thomas Aquinas

Last season: 10-2 (5A semifinals)

Nobody gave the Saints a chance last year, but they are the reigning champs.

7. BV Southwest

Last season: 5-4 (no postseason)

Depth is an issue, so is experience. The Timberwolves might need time to get rolling.

8. BV North

Better balance on offense might yield better results in 2013.

Last season: 10-2 (6A semifinals)

Firebirds feel like there’s unfinished business to attend to.

Last season: 3-7 (6A playoffs)

Great linebackers, great tailback (Venus Triplett) and great tradition.

4. Olathe East

Last season: 6-5 (6A quarterfinals)

The Hawks are on a mission to reach the Class 6A playoffs for the 13th consecutive season and probably won’t have much trouble reaching that goal.

The Falcons showed some mettle in a season-opening 33-20 win Thursday against Lawrence.

6. SM South

Last season: 4-5 (no postseason)

Don’t sleep on the Raiders, who have a seasoned line and some speed.

7. SM East

Last season: 7-3 (6A playoffs)

First-year coach Dustin Delaney likes his defense and flexbone offense presents challenges to opponents.

8. Olathe Northwest

Last season: 2-7 (no postseason)

Long considered a sleeping giant, can Chip Sherman help the Ravens turn a corner?

9. Lawrence

Last season: 8-3 (6A quarterfinals)

Young, but talented — will bounce back from season-opening loss to Olathe South.

10. Leavenworth

Last season: 4-5 (no postseason)

Former Olathe South coach Mark Littrell knows what it takes to win in the Sunflower League.

11. SM Northwest
