Eugene Cole of Kansas City is worried about safety on the ramp from westbound Missouri 152 to northbound Interstate 29 while construction is taking place.
I-29 has two narrow lanes, and it leaves little room to merge because of concrete barriers on the right side of the ramp, or what would be the third lane of I-29, Cole said. There isn’t much opportunity to increase speed before entering the interstate.
Cole told his wife about it one day before she headed to Weston. When she came home, she said she thought she was going to be in a wreck when she entered the interstate. She was quickly overtaken by a fast tractor-trailer. Fortunately, the truck went by without any contact.
Cole and his wife will be finding another way to reach I-29 until the construction project is finished. When will that happen?
Construction does take time, so it will be a little while yet before the situation improves.
The work zone on the ramp is part of the construction of a diverging diamond interchange at Tiffany Springs Parkway, said Zachary Zalneraitis, senior traffic studies specialist for the Missouri Department of Transportation. The on- and off-ramps are being realigned to provide a smoother transition and easier access to Ambassador Drive.
While the work continues, a few tools are in place to help drivers, said MoDOT spokesman Steve Porter.
On the ramp for Missouri 152, about a half mile before the work zone, there is a message board that tells drivers to “yield ahead” and “be prepared to stop.” At the merge area, orange reflective posts have been installed on both sides of the ramp to guide drivers into the 725-foot merge lane.
Construction is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2014, but some parts may be completed earlier.
The Watchdog is crossing his paws for Cole and his wife that this particular intersection is one of those parts.
