St. Pius X High School
Scholarship recipients: Gabrielle Chirpich, a sophomore, and John Perlik, a junior, were each awarded $500 scholarships by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Padraig Pearse Division No. 1 of Kansas City.
The students were selected based on church, school and community activities and a 500-word essay on a topic related to Ireland.
Perlik wrote about United Irishmen, a group advocating independence in Ireland. Chirpich’s essay was about the Irish potato famine.
The scholarships are awarded annually to students enrolled in a Kansas City area Catholic high school.
Park Hill School District
Missouri leaders: Wisdom Nwike and Katherine Thompson, both seniors at Park Hill High School, were elected to state offices this summer.
Nwike was elected governor of Missouri Boys State and Thompson was governor of Missouri Girls State.
Participants in the state leadership sessions were chosen based on leadership, citizenship, academics and character. The weeklong programs were held on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
Thompson and Nwike will serve during the 2013-2014 academic year. The summer leadership sessions are designed to promote pride in America and familiarize future voters with the working of government at the city, county and state level.
Students have the opportunity to run for offices, play a musical instrument and write for the session’s daily newspaper while they learn about benefits and responsibilities of citizenship.
Band selected: The Park Hill South High School concert band has been selected to perform at the 2014 Missouri Music Educators Association convention in January.
It is one of 10 bands chosen statewide. Craig Miller is the band director.
