An elderly couple was killed by a fire in their home Friday morning in Lexington, Mo.
They were identified as 79-year-old Maxine Deamos and 84-year-old Nicholas Deamos.
Lexington Fire & Rescue Chief Kirk Smith said the fire was reported shortly after 6 a.m. and flames were coming out of the rear of the house at 931 Highland Ave. when crews arrived. The couple was found in their bed on the first floor and they were transported to separate hospitals where they died, apparently of smoke inhalation.
Smith said the home did not have a working smoke detector. The cause is under investigation but it appears to be an electrical accident, Smith said. Fire crews were called back to the house late Friday afternoon after the back of the structure collapsed and rekindled the fire.
Nick Deamos had a tax preparation business in Lexington, which is in Lafayette County on the Missouri River about 40 miles east of Kansas City.
