Judge declines to stop $3 muni court fee, at least for now

Missouri courts that are now collecting a $3 surcharge for the sheriffs’ retirement fund can continue to do so.

Cole County Circuit Court Judge Jon Beteem today declined a request for a temporary restraining order against the fee, which went into effect Wednesday.

Opponents of the surcharge — and some judges and cities — say the fee is unconstitutional.

It’s now collected on every ticket or conviction in most municipal courts.
