Former Shawnee Mission South running back Gabe Guild earned a starting spot in the Holy Cross backfield as a true freshman.

Guild (5-11, 190) is listed atop the Crusaders’ depth chart at tailback entering Saturday’s season-opener at Bryant in Smithfield, R.I.

Perhaps it was injuries or a lack of exposure, but Guild didn’t get many offers — FCS power South Dakota State also offered a scholarship.

He had a brilliant career with the Raiders, topping 100 yards in every game as a junior and leading the Sunflower League in rushing with 1,641 yards and 12 touchdowns on 199 carries.

Despite missing roughly two games with a sprained ankle as a senior, Guild backed up his breakout season with 1,470 yards and 12 more touchdowns as senior. He finished his career with nearly 5,000 all-purpose yards and 29 total touchdowns.

If he remains healthy and keeps up that kind of production, there are going to be a lot of programs in the Midwest region wondering how they overlooked Guild.
