Rated R | Time: 1:37
At 29, Leigh (Kristen Bell) flees her life in New York City, returning to her parents’ home and her high school job as a lifeguard.
Her attempt to build a new life includes reuniting with her old pals — closeted Todd (Martin Starr) and uptight Mel (Mamie Gummer) — and launching an affair with a 16-year-old (David Lambert).
Critics haven’t been kind:
• Ernest Hardy, The Village Voice: “From concept to execution to tone, writer-director Liz W. Garcia’s ‘The Lifeguard’ is a lifeless misfire.”
• Justin Lowe, The Hollywood Reporter: “Opportunities that could be better devoted to developing character or advancing the plot are squandered on repetitive montage sequences supported by forgettably lighthearted pop tunes.”
• Peter Debruge, Variety: “Drowning in self-pity is about as fun to watch as it sounds.”
