A Kansas City police officer following up on a call about a possible prowler was assaulted Monday morning when he tried to stop a suspect.

The officer was not seriously injured, according to Police Chief Darryl Forte on Twitter.

The assault occurred about 6:30 a.m. near Wheeling and Smart avenues when the officer confronted the suspect. Police said the man assaulted the officer and then ran away.

Police found the man hiding in a storm cellar and arrested him, Forte said on Twitter.
