A second child, a boy, was discovered at the scene uninjured.
Police were investigating the deaths as homicides. They were just beginning to process the scene Friday night and were waiting for a search warrant. Officers were seen knocking on doors in the neighborhood.
Police did not release the names of the victims but said they possibly were a mother and daughter. The woman was said to be in her 20s and the child between the ages of 4 and 6.
Friends and family members, who had gathered across the street, erupted with screams at the news. A man had arrived earlier and beat the pavement with his fists, crying, “Where is my baby?”
Friends said the woman was a single, working mother who lived at the home with her daughter and a son said to be 1 year old. They said a relative came to check on the family Friday evening and discovered the door open and blood inside.
A police officer was seen carrying a small child away from the scene. Someone brought diapers and juice to the officers, apparently for the child.
Sgt. Stacey Graves said police received a call about 7:15 p.m. from an extremely upset person who discovered the bodies. Graves could not say how or when the victims died.
A neighbor said that several shots were heard in the area about 10 p.m. Thursday night and that earlier in the evening police had been seeking a carjacking suspect in the neighborhood. But it was not clear if any of that was related to the bodies.
