The Kansas City Health Department has temporarily closed the Family Dollar store at 1201 E. Meyer Blvd.

After an Aug. 22 follow-up inspection, the department closed the store because of a rat infestation that has “shown no improvement.” The inspector noted rat hair, urine and feces on store shelves throughout the store, chewed food and soap, and pet food packages chewed open.

Store officials could not be reached for comment.

The Family Dollar store must remain closed until store officials can demonstrate in a follow-up inspection that effective pest control measures are in place.

It was the third follow-up inspection for the store in recent weeks. It had three critical violations during a July 18 inspection following a complaint, including some candy packages that had evidence of rats chewing on them.

During a July 26 follow-up inspection it had three critical violations. Another inspection on Aug. 13 also found rat droppings, hair and urine on store shelves.
