Luck prevails in Georgia school shooting

The people in the Atlanta area and the country are incredibly lucky.

The school shooting on Tuesday didn’t result in a loss of life like the one the country still mourns at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where 26 children and educators were gunned down before the shooter took his life. A 20-year-old Georgia assailant, Michael Brandon Hill, had nearly 500 rounds of ammunition, an assault rifle and other weapons when he entered Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur.

No one was injured, and police took Hill into custody after an exchanged of gunfire. The school was safely evacuated.

But the incident could have been far worse. It points to the continuing need for gun control and other pro-active measures to prevent shootings at school.

The National Rifle Association has neutered lawmakers in Congress and elsewhere from passing meaningful gun control legislation, allowing liberal gun ownership and use to dominate the country. The incident in Georgia should telegraph to the nation that not all gun owners are good or can be trusted. More guns with greater fire power only puts more people at risk for injury and death.
