Lexmark International plans to acquire Saperion AG, a German software company, for $72 million and will shift its operations into Shawnee-based Perceptive Software.

Lexmark said the proposed acquisition of Saperion, which provides business management software in Europe, would support its growth and strengthen its software and other business products and services.

“Saperion will join Perceptive’s global team of process and content management experts, while its leadership in the European market will further strengthen Perceptive’s global footprint,” Scott Coon, Perceptive’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Perceptive, which is building a new headquarters complex in Lenexa, has about 700 area employees. The company expects to move into its new building next spring, Sherlyn Manson, a Perceptive spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

Lexmark, based in Lexington, Ky., said it expects the purchase to be completed in the third quarter, pending regulatory approvals.

Once the sale is completed, Saperion will be rolled into Perceptive’s operations, Lexmark said. Saperion’s clients include Lufthansa, Vodafone, Siemens, Daimler and Henkel.
