Academy Sports + Outdoors, a sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer, has opened a 73,000-square-foot store at 9781 Quivira Road, Overland Park, just south of Oak Park Mall. Grand opening events start at 8 a.m. Friday with giveaways including free Crocs to the first 100 customers in line on Friday, free Berkley tackle bags to the first 100 customers in line on Saturday and a free pair of Wrangler jeans to the first 100 customers in line on Sunday.

There are fire pits, grills and barbecue spices and sauces, a range of barbecue chips and woods, backpacks from camouflage to zebra to plaid prints, Spider-Man and Hello Kitty tents, and apparel featuring professional and college logos.
With the new Overland Park store, the Texas-based Academy Sports + Outdoors now has 166 locations. Annual sales exceed $3.5 billion.
Coming up, an Olathe Academy Sports + Outdoors store is scheduled to open this fall at 135th Street and Blackbob Road.
Meanwhile, the metros first Recreational Equipment Inc., better known as REI, plans an early October opening in Overland Parks Prairiefire development. Mega sporting goods store and entertainment center Scheels plans a June 2015 opening in Overland Parks Corbin Park.
Pie Five passes the five-minute test
When Overland Parks new Pie Five Pizza Co. promised pizza made-to-order in five minutes, I had to put them to the test. So I showed up at the restaurant at 13366 Metcalf Ave. one recent night, ordering two pizzas to go plus a salad. From placing the order to paying for it, thats exactly what it took.
Area franchisee Dave Goebel said a new TurboChef oven that can bake the pizzas in 2 1/2 minutes at 600 degrees makes it possible.
According to recent report by market researchers Technomic Inc., made-to-order pizza could follow better burgers as the next high-growth niche. Technomic said the concepts are not only delivering better quality and fresher ingredients, consumers can create their own pizzas that are then ready within minutes. Thats a proven recipe for success within the fast casual space, the research firm said.

What is the word on when the Corner Bakery Cafe will open? Where are they located? Which location opens first? Have they decided on future locations yet?
The metros first Corner Bakery Cafe is now under construction in Camelot Court at 119th Street and Roe Avenue with a Nov. 11 opening scheduled. Construction on another restaurant, this one in Corbin Park at 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, is scheduled to start next week with a mid-January opening planned. The area franchisee is currently considering several other sites but no deal has been signed.
