Updated: 2013-08-16T03:40:13Z

A handgun was found Thursday inside the back pack of a student outside of Spring Hill High School in southern Johnson County.

Spring Hill School District officials posted a notice about the incident on the district website later Thursday.

A Johnson County sheriff’s deputy assigned as a school resource officer was checking on a report of a student “in need of care” outside the school at 197th and Ridgeview Road when the gun was found, according to the school district notice.

The student was not arrested, but was given assistance in obtaining mental health treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.
