ST. JOSEPH — Jamaal Charles was working out with other injured players rather than practicing with the Chiefs on Wednesday, but coach Andy Reid said Charles still might play in Friday night’s preseason game against San Francisco at Arrowhead Stadium.

“We’ll see how he does in the next couple of days,’’ Reid said. “I haven’t determined anything whether or not he’ll play (against the 49ers). We’ll take it day by day. If he can play, he’ll play. If he can’t, he won’t.’’
Charles strained his right foot in practice Monday. He joined the Chiefs for the start of practice. But he didn’t have a helmet, a sign he wasn’t going to participate. He quickly left the field to join other injured players in working out on the side of a hill near the practice field.
“He’s getting better,’’ Reid said. “He worked out today. He’s not quite there yet. He’s making progress. He feels a lot better.
“If push came to shove, he probably could have gone today, but as a precautionary measure we kept him out.’’
