The new Parker Hospitality Group, San Francisco, plans to open five Spin restaurants within seven years in San Mateo County and northern Santa Clara County in the San Francisco Bay area. It has an option to open five Spin restaurants in the rest of Santa Clara County.
Jeffrey P. Parker Jr. is president of Parker Hospitality Group. He has four Toaster Oven Sandwich Shops in San Francisco’s financial district and wanted to add a fast-casual operation to his portfolio.
“Pizza is a booming segment, and one thing I enjoyed about Spin is the hybrid service style where you order at the counter and then can order more at the table,” Parker said. “You save on labor a little bit, but you don’t miss out on the full-service aspect as a diner.”
Spin’s first franchisee, Hofman Hospitality Group in Signal Hill, Calif., recently opened a Spin restaurant near Angels Stadium in Orange County and plans 36 more of the restaurants in Southern California. Two are under construction, with one restaurant scheduled to open in December and another in March 2014.
“I think that it’s a great product first of all. The food is outstanding — the pizza, salads and sandwiches — and it’s a fun place to go,” said Craig Hofman, president of Hofman Hospitality Group. “We are doing more marketing to get people in, but the reviews on social media have been outstanding, and we are seeing people coming back.”
Parker is a graduate of Cornell University’s hotel and restaurant management program with Craig Hofman’s son, Brad Hofman.
Gail Lozoff, co-founder and co-owner of Spin, said franchising is a preferred way for the company to expand. Spin is selecting seasoned restaurateurs who known their markets.
“Local knowledge is so important,” she said. “There’s nothing like knowing what it feels like in that trade area, what routines are established. Do they like thin pizza, thick pizza? For example, in California they told us you have to have pineapple — you can’t open without pineapple.”
Spin, founded in 2005, has five area locations, with a sixth set to open in October.
