A resident called police about 12:35 p.m. to report what appeared to be a body along his property line. His property backs up to a small wooded area and is next to a gas station. Officers confirmed a man was dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Police Chief Darryl Forte said the black man, who appeared to be in his 20s, was the victim of a homicide.
Police were called to the area Sunday night after customers at the gas station at 59th and Swope reported an exchange of gunfire. The witnesses said a white vehicle pulled up and an occupant opened fire at a man pumping gas. The man pumping gas jumped into his vehicle and fired at the white vehicle as he chased it northbound on Swope.
When officers arrived, the shooters were gone and there was no evidence that anyone had been hit. At least one bullet hit the gas station at 59th and Swope and another bullet damaged an employee’s car. The witnesses told police they stayed inside the gas station to avoid being hit by bullets.
Police were investigating whether that event was related to the discovery of the man’s body. Neighbors told police gunfire in the area is common. Police did not say how long the man’s body had been at the scene.
