The Kansas City Star
For the first time in eight weeks, FC Kansas City lost a match. Boston snapped the Blues 10-game unbeaten streak on Saturday with a 1-0 victory behind Sydney Lerouxs goal in the 65th minute in Somerville, Mass.
FC Kansas City lost for the first time since June 16.
I feel like we relaxed a little bit, FC Kansas City coach Vlatko Andonovski said. We played well in the last 10 games and got good results. We felt comfortable going to Boston, so we didnt play our best game.
And that, in effect, makes the final week of the National Womens Soccer League inaugural season much more interesting.
FC Kansas City remains atop the league standings with 38 points with one regular season match remaining a home date against Chicago on Aug. 18 but its lead shrunk following Saturdays loss.
Sky Blue FC (New Jersey), Portland FC and Western New York all earned one point on draws Saturday and trail FC Kansas City by three points each.
The top two teams will play host to semifinals matches on Aug. 24.
The only good part of the loss is its a wake-up call, Andonovski said. "Were in a situation where we have to win our last game. Well look at the tape and see what went wrong.
