A lot of truckers and travelers have cursed as they’ve fought the prairie winds ripping across Kansas.

It appears now that the wind in the Sunflower State may be its greatest natural resource. Kansas is among the largest and fastest growing wind energy markets in the country, the U.S. Department of Energy reports.

The Wind Technologies Market Report lists Kansas as third in the U.S. in the percentage of in-state, wind-power electricity generation, The Kansas City Star reports. A drive past the many expansive wind farms in Kansas is enough to show how much the state is harvesting in clean energy.

But they also show that a lot more can be done in Kansas and elsewhere to fuel the power needs of industries and homes using wind energy.
