Observe the Perseid Meteors
Earthlings can enjoy the annual Perseid meteor shower Sunday night in an area away from bright city lights, according to Charles Geilker of the Pillsbury Observatory at William Jewell College.
Earth passes through the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle each year. The best show is after midnight and observers may see up to 50 meteors an hour, said Geilker.
The shower is more intense some years than others. Some meteors will leave trails and sparks and some will break into fragments or even produce a bright flash as they enter Earth’s atmosphere.
The observatory will not hold an open house in August.
The Northland Grandfamilies will learn about internet safety at its next meeting at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 at North Cross United Methodist Church, 1321 N.E. Vivion Road, Kansas City, North.
Clay County Detective Shannon Crawford will speak. Crawford is a member of the Western Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force.
