ST. JOSEPH — Backup quarterback Chase Daniel held for kicker Ryan Succops field-goal attempts during the Chiefs' training camp practice Sunday, but coach Andy Reid said it was for depth purposes.

Punter Dustin Colquitt will remain the holder.
Though most teams deploy their punters as holders, Daniel held during his four seasons at New Orleans and enjoys the role. Unlike a punter, a quarterback cannot only better salvage a bad snap, but can execute a fake field goal or be a threat for a two-point conversion.
When you run a quarterback out there as a holder, it automatically puts the defense on alert, Daniel said. I think it works to our advantage sometimes. Im more than happy to do it.
So why dont quarterbacks serve as holders, as they did in the days when Len Dawson held for Jan Stenerud. Some coaches dont like their quarterbacks dividing practice time between offense and special teams. And others dont want to risk injuries to their quarterbacks.
You can look at that for part of the practice, Reid said of quarterbacks as holders, or you can look at the punter, who can do it for the whole practice. The punter is pretty good at it.
