Six-hour police standoff in Northland ends

Updated: 2013-07-28T03:20:47Z

A suicidal man surrendered to police Saturday night more than six hours after sparking a standoff at a Northland home.

The man, who apparently grazed his face with a gunshot, came out of the home in the 5200 block of N.E. 45th Street unarmed about 10 p.m. His elderly mother, who was inside the home throughout the ordeal, exited the home five or ten minutes before her son. She said she heard a gunshot from her son’s bedroom.

The incident began about 3:30 p.m., when police were sent to the home by someone who wanted officers to check on the man, who was armed.

Officers have dealt with the man previously, so they called him by phone and he threatened to start a “war” if police showed up. Police then called an Operation 100, which summoned the tactical team and negotiators.

During the standoff, the man walked onto his porch several times and taunted officers with a gun to his neck.
