Tow truck driver hits Kansas City councilman’s car

Updated: 2013-07-26T23:53:46Z

A tow truck driver who was allegedly impaired struck Kansas City Councilman John Sharp’s car Thursday night before crashing into a highway median cable.

Sharp was not hurt.

The driver walked away from the wreckage but was later arrested by police and tested for drug use. The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 71 at Blue River Road.

Sharp told police he was southbound when the speeding tow truck tried to pass him on the right. The tow truck suddenly swerved and hit the rear passenger side of Sharp’s car before careening across several lanes into the median, where the truck destroyed a quarter-mile of crossover cables and posts. Two motorcyclists told police that the tow truck nearly struck them as well.
