The ground search for a missing Liberty man was suspended after dark on Tuesday, but a Kansas City police helicopter with an infrared detector continued to comb an area near Missouri 291 and Ruth Ewing Road.

A K9 dog had picked up Chad Rogers’ scent in the late afternoon. After working for about four hours in the heat, the dog was allowed to rest, said Liberty police Sgt. Bob Kumpost.

That’s when 42 teams of about 10 volunteers each were given the go-ahead to fan out in the search for the 30-year-old jogger, who was last seen Monday night when he left home for a run.

Rogers is a marathoner who frequently runs up to 15 miles along different routes. He was last seen wearing a bright orange visor with Newton Running printed on it, black running shorts and red running shoes. He was not wearing a shirt and reportedly did not carry a phone.

He is white with a shaven head, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 pounds. He has tattoos on both arms and forearms, across his upper chest and on both thighs and right calf.

Rogers and his wife, Sarah, have a 13-month-old son and he is a stay-at-home dad, said his father, Greg Rogers.

Prayers and good wishes poured in from across the country on Twitter and on a Facebook page called Bring Chad Home.

Kumpost said he expected search efforts to resume this morning.

Rogers was hired as a full-time youth director at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City in August 2011 and held that position before moving to Liberty last fall, The Jefferson City News Tribune reported.

Church administrator Jerry Kelly told the paper that Rogers is a high-energy person. He said the church family was praying that Rogers will be found safe.
