Custom cake maker Irina Yefremov is back in the retail business.

Her Irina’s Gourmet Bakery is now open in the Stoll Park Retail & Professional Center, 11902 W. 119th St., Overland Park, just west of Quivira Road.
The shop sells such goodies as key lime tarts, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate mousse, cupcakes, cannoli, orange almond biscotti, blueberry raspberry muffins, cherry currant scones, and breads like challah and eight grain.
But she still specializes in custom cakes for weddings, baby showers, birthdays, and other celebrations, or just for no reason at all but to take home something sweet.
She considers her cakes “art pieces” and is known for her bride’s dress shaped cakes. But she also has created cakes from dogs to dinosaurs, a violin cake for a musician’s birthday, an airplane for a boy’s birthday, even a “baby bump” cake for a baby shower.
Yefremov, a native of the Ukraine, relocated to the Kansas City area more than two decades ago when her husband transferred for his company. She couldn’t find a position in her computer programming field, but friends in the Jewish community in Johnson County helped her land a job as a baker at the Leawood Hen House. Later she became a bakery manager for the grocery store chain.
After a decade with the company she was ready to go out on her own, opening Irina’s Gourmet Bakery in Leawood in late 2005. In 2008 she relocated to Overland Park and just concentrated on her custom cake business. Or at least she planned to before customer requests put her back into the retail business.
“I used to offer breakfast and lunch and the cake business but the cake business really took off. Then when I went to just the cake business my customers wanted me to go back to retail,” she said.
The Village at Burlington Creek is getting several new tenants.
Swirl Wine Bar and Shoppe plans an early September opening at 6006 N.W. 63rd Terr. It will have kegs of wine on tap, along with Boulevard Brewing Co. beers, and small plates that could include cheese trays with cured meats. It also will sell bottles of wine in the ranges of $10, $15, $20 and $30-and-up, and wine accessories and specialty food items.
Co-owner Heather Redman had worked for a Kansas City wine distributor for more than a decade and lives in the Burlington Creek area. Her partners in Swirl are Ray and Lisa Wait.
Culver’s also plans to open a new freestanding building in the center.
In other Burlington Creek news:
• Luna Azteca Mexican Grill plans to open in the center by mid-August. The family owned business also has another Northland location.
• Liberty’s Maysy’s Nail & Spa opened its second location in Burlington Creek in May. Smoothie King also recently opened in the center and Edible Arrangements is scheduled to open by September.
The Village at Burlington Creek is just off Interstate 29 and 64th Street. Tenants include restaurants, retail and service-based businesses. It expects to break ground in August for a new 110,000-square-foot, three-story building that will have retail and offices on the first floor and lofts above.
