After three decades working in food and beverage for area hotels, Robert Magee is going out on his own with a new restaurant concept.

He is in final negotiations to open Q39 (for barbecue and 39th Street) in the former Oriental Feast building at 1000 W. 39th St., just west of Southwest Trafficway. The 5,623-square-foot space would be remodeled and feature an open kitchen, stained concrete floors, and garage doors on the front that would be raised during nicer weather. If the deal is completed, Magee plans a mid-January 2014 opening.
In keeping with the gastropub theme of upgraded food and drink, Q39’s menu is set to include items like steaks, grilled salmon, and barbecue chicken Cobb salad.
“Everything on the menu is going to be made from scratch — house-cut fries, slaw, and seasonal sides —like a grilled corn on the cob with a Parmesan and cumin ailoi or watermelon salad if I was open right now,” Magee said. “Our goal is to bring barbecue up to the next level — full-service, competition barbecue, upgraded beer and wines.”
