A 14-year-old boy accused of killing his father earlier this month made a brief court appearance Tuesday in Johnson County and had another hearing scheduled for late August.

The boy’s attorney, N. Trey Pettlon III, said that in the meantime a psychological evaluation will be performed. That could provide some guidance to the judge as to whether the boy, Dalton Gay, should be tried as an adult.

Although still recognized as a juvenile, the boy is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father, Darren Gay, 46.

He was killed July 2 outside a Shawnee business, where the son had been taken for a scheduled visit with his father, according to Shawnee police.

Pettlon described his client Tuesday as “a typical 14-year-old boy.”

“He wasn’t perfect, but he was respectful to his friends and teachers and other adults,” Pettlon said in a written statement.

Pettlon said he could not discuss the case in detail while charges are pending.
