The driver and a passenger were thrown from the vehicle when it crashed about 12:40 a.m. near Swope Parkway. Another passenger crawled out of the wreckage. The passengers were juveniles, police said.
The 42-year-old shooting victim told police he was walking with a 26-year-old friend when a gold SUV passed them, turned around and drove back toward them. A man stepped out of the SUV, pointed a gun at them and demanded their cash. The victim said they didn’t have any money while his friend ran away.
The gunman fired at the friend but missed. The gunman then fired at the victim, hitting him in the hip.
Police later saw an SUV fitting that description at Independence and Hardesty avenues. The SUV driver initially pulled over for officers but then sped away, eventually losing control on Watkins Drive. The SUV hit a guardrail, went down an embankment and overturned.
All three in the SUV were taken to hospitals. The driver suffered serious injuries, police said.
