Police: Man tries to set girlfriend on fire during argument

He was so mad at his girlfriend for taking a shovel to his lawn mower during an argument that Wichita police say he dumped gas on her and tried to set her on fire.

Now authorities are trying to find him.

The incident unfolded near Central and Oliver around 5 p.m. Sunday when the couple began arguing as they were getting gasoline for the mower, Lt. Doug Nolte said. The dispute was over “the male half’s relationships with other women,” Nolte said.

During the drive home to the 1000 block of North Pershing, he said, the 34-year-old man poured a drink on the 33-year-old woman. When they arrived at the house, she got out of the vehicle and began bashing his lawn mower with a shovel.

He became enraged, took the gasoline they had purchased and poured some on her before chasing her with a lighter and trying to set her on fire, Nolte said.

She was able to get inside the house and lock the door, where her mother called 911. The man left the scene before the officers’ arrival, and they’re still looking for him.
