Two reported missing in Smithville Lake

Updated: 2013-07-05T02:05:19Z

Two men apparently drowned in the northern part of Smithville Lake on Thursday afternoon.

Missouri Highway Patrol crews dragged the lake Thursday evening in search of their bodies but did not find them before nightfall. They suspended operations about 9 p.m. but expect to resume them Friday morning.

The men, both reported to be in their 50s, were wading in the area when one of the men disappeared about 5:30 p.m. The other man tried to help him and also vanished, said Sgt. Sheldon Lyon, a spokesman for Troop H in St. Joseph.

The search operations were under way near the Arnold Road access point south of Plattsburg, which is in Clinton County.
