A mere 10 days ago, FC Kansas City approached a match against Washington with a sense of desperation to guide its season in a better direction. The Blues had lost three of their past five games, including a lackluster performance earlier in the week that forced coach Vlatko Andonovski to make significant changes to his starting lineup.

As for the results — FC Kansas City responded that afternoon against Washington on June 23 with arguably its most complete performance of the season to date, resulting in a two-goal victory and its first home win in a month.

The Blues haven’t looked back since.

As they prepare for a rematch on the road against Washington at 6:30 p.m. today, there is a much different type of discussion brewing. With a three-match unbeaten streak, including a 2-0 victory against Portland FC on Sunday, is FC Kansas City reaching the apex of its season?

Those younger players — most notably midfielder Erika Tymrak, forward Courtney Jones and striker Melissa Henderson — have added speed and possession.

“As we get toward the end of the season, everyone realizes how important every single game is,” Andonovski said. “We’re treating every game from here on out like the most important game of the season.”
