So far this season, Sporting Kansas City have found the back of the next 20 times in league play.
The Kansas City Star
Dom Dwyer has scored 18 by himself while on loan with Orlando City SC while on loan with the USL-Pro side. He's a vital reason why Orlando are 10-1-2 this year, however he didn't play for the team's biggest win of the year against Kansas City in the Open Cup.
Earlier this morning, Kansas City owner Robb Heineman tweeted that the red-hot Dwyer was coming back to Kansas City. Suddenly, Kansas City seems flush with striker options. Kei Kamara rejoined the team in May after his own loan spell in England. Teal Bunbury made his first MLS appearance last weekend against Dallas since his ACL injury last season.
Already in the mix: Leading scorer and designated player Claudio Bieler, former MLS rookie of the year C.J. Sapong, Jacob Peterson and Soony Saad.
Though, since topping Chivas USA 4-0 back on May 5, Kansas City have struggled offensively with just seven goals through eight games. Two of those goals were scored by defenders (Aurelien Collin and Ike Opara) while Kamara (3) and Bieler (2) have carried the rest. Though, only four of those goals have come in the run of play as both Kamara and Bieler picked up goals via penalty kicks.
Dwyer will be available immediately this weekend and we've not heard yet whether Peter Vermes appealed the red card that Sapong picked up in Dallas.
Kansas City will certainly be getting an in-form striker back. No, will he immediately slip into the team's 18-man roster and can he sustain that form against a higher level of competition?
Other KC notes
• Jurgen Klinsmann did not call up any Sporting KC players (Graham Zusi, Matt Besler, Benny Feilhaber were on the preliminary roster) to the U.S. roster for the Gold Cup group stage. (He has hinted that he might add up to four players from the preliminary rosters for the later stages.)
• KC will be losing players for the Gold Cup, however. Right back Mechack Jerome and midfielder Peterson Joseph have left the team to train with the Haitian national team. Jerome, of late, has been a critical starter for KC with Chance Myers and Seth Sinovic battling injuries.
• Sporting could also be without two more key players this Saturday: Left back Seth Sinovic and midfielder Paulo Nagamura are both nursing injuries (per MLSsoccer.com. Sinovic is working through a hamstring tweak that kept him out of the squad last weekend while Nagamura had to leave the Dallas game early with an ankle injury. Both are day-to-day.
