An Olathe man was charged Wednesday with attempted first-degree murder after an alleged hammer attack on his mother.

Majok Wany Anyit, 24, was in the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday night in lieu of posting $500,000 bond. He was assigned a public defender.

According to the criminal complaint, Anyit hit the 48-year-old woman “numerous times in the head with a hammer” with premeditation to kill her.

Police were called shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday to an apartment at 18820 W. 153rd Court and found the victim with a severe head wound. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Anyit was found at a nearby QuikTrip and arrested.

Court records show Anyit was convicted in 2008 of assaulting a law enforcement officer and was sentenced to six months in jail. He also was convicted of disorderly conduct later that year and was sentenced to 21 days.

Court records say Anyit is a native of Sudan. The victim’s Facebook page says that she is also from Sudan and that Anyit is her son.
