Garmin, UMB, H&R Block close wild week on good note

Most regional stocks ended a wild week on Wall Street with modest gains Friday.

Among the biggest percentage gainers were Garmin and UMB Financial, both up 1.3 percent, H&R Block, up .7 percent, and Great Plains Energy, up 1.5 percent.

Kansas City Southern, Sprint, Waddell & Reed, and YRC were among the biggest percentage losers.

Overall, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 41 points Friday, or 0.3 percent, to end at 14,799.

The Dow plunged 560 points Wednesday through Thursday after the Federal Reserve said it expected to end its bond-buying program by the middle of next year if the economy continues to improve.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose four points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,592 points.

Technology stocks fell after business software maker Oracle disappointed investors late Thursday with flat revenue.

The Nasdaq composite fell seven points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,357.

Slightly more stocks rose than fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading volume was very heavy at 5.5 billion shares.

BATS 1000 rose 44.21 points, or 0.25 percent , to close at 17,847.31.

Dow Jones rose 41.08 points, or 0.28 percent, to close at 14,799.40.

The Nasdaq fell 7.39 points, or 0.22 percent, to close at 3,357.25.

S&P 500 rose 4.24 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 1,592.43.

Regional movers

Capitol Federal Financial rose 8 cents, or 0.67%, to close at $11.94.

Cerner Corp. rose 6 cents, or 0.06%, to close at $94.59.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 9 cents, or 0.21%, to close at $43.11.

Compass Minerals fell 35 cents, or 0.42%, to close at $83.11.

DST Systems Inc. fell 1 cents, or 0.02%, to close at $64.86.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 5 cents, or 0.23%, to close at $21.69.

Garmin Ltd. rose 45 cents, or 1.31%, to close at $34.69.

Great Plains Energy rose 32 cents, or 1.46%, to close at $22.26.

H&R Block Inc. rose 20 cents, or 0.71%, to close at $28.43.

Inergy L.P. rose $1.51, or 10.27%, to close at $16.21.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 38 cents, or 1.03%, to close at $37.11.

Kansas City Southern fell 92 cents, or 0.85%, to close at $107.07.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 23 cents, or 1.15%, to close at $20.30.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 17 cents, or 0.16%, to close at $110.99.

Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 10 cents, or 1.41%, to close at $6.97.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 68 cents, or 1.31%, to close at $52.56.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. fell $1.05, or 2.39%, to close at $42.95.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 68 cents, or 2.86%, to close at $23.11.
