College student sentenced in sex case involving Platte County girl

Updated: 2013-06-21T18:48:48Z

A South African college student was sentenced Friday to serve 100 days in jail for a sexual encounter with a 12-year-old Platte County girl in 2010.

The jail sentence was imposed on 23-year-old Jacobus P. Swanepoel as a condition of probation that was granted during a sentencing hearing Friday in Platte County Circuit Court. He received a suspended sentence of nine years in prison that he could be required to serve if he violates conditions of his five-year probation.

Swanepoel, who was 20 and living in Olathe at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty in May to having sex with the girl, who he met in an online chat room.
