Overnight fire damages Gates Bar-B-Q in Kansas City, Kan.

Updated: 2013-06-19T16:26:41Z

An overnight fire heavily damaged Gates Bar-B-Q restaurant in northeast Kansas City, Kan.

Firefighters responded to the fire at midnight Wednesday at the restaurant at North 10th Street and State Avenue.

The first crews arriving on the scene reported smoke and embers coming from the smoke stack. The inside of the restaurant, however, was clear of smoke, according to a release from Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Shirley with the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.

Firefighters cut ventilation holes to open up the roof and discovered that fire had spread to the attic space.

The fire, which was confined to the smoke stack and attic area, caused an estimated $100,000 in damages. The cause, which is still under investigation, appears to be unintentional.
