Liberty couple pleads guilty in $2.8 million scheme

Laura and Craig Dejong of Liberty pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to an embezzlement and check kiting scheme that took them on cruises, paid for vehicles and season sporting tickets and enabled them to gamble millions on the slots.

Laura Dejong, 54, embezzled from family-owned Kansas City Screw Products Inc. from 2003-2011. Check kiting to hide the scheme cost Central Bank $96,000. She pleaded to mail fraud and filing a false tax return and could be sentenced to up to 23 years without parole. Craig Dejong, 55, pleaded to filing a false tax return and could be sentenced to up to three years.
