Nikita, one of Kansas City Zoo’s two polar bears, is ill

Updated: 2013-06-18T23:05:20Z

The male polar bear at the Kansas City Zoo is off exhibit and is being treated with gastrointestinal medication, officials said Tuesday.

Nikita is also being fed a diet of boiled beef in the holding area behind the exhibit.

“He is being closely monitored and treated by our professional veterinary and keeper staff,” the zoo said in a prepared statement.

Berlin, the zoo’s female polar bear, remains on public view.
