A 36-year-old Lee’s Summit woman who died Tuesday night after a head-on crash on Missouri 7 in Indpendence has been identified as Kristel Pietarila.

The two-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. A 2006 Ford Freestyle crossed the center line and struck a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Pietarila, on Missouri 7 near 30th Terrace, according to Independence police.

Pietarila was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, a police release said. The driver of the Freestyle was still in serious, but improving, condition Wednesday morning, Sgt. Steve McVay said.

The collision remains under investigation, but McVay said alcohol was not involved in the crash.
