Shares in Sprint Nextel climbed more than 2 percent Tuesday as investors reacted positively to the sweetened buyout offer from Tokyo-based SoftBank.
SoftBank, which initially forged a takeover agreement with Overland Park-based Sprint last October, upped its bid late Monday by offering more money to shareholders. However, Dish Network, which also has an offer on the table for Sprint, still has until next Tuesday to make a counteroffer that would force Sprints directors to reevaluate.
Shares in Sprint closed Tuesday at $7.35, up 17 cents or 2.4 percent.
The other regional gainer of note was YRC, up 5.3 percent.
There were plenty of local losers, including H&R Block, Kansas City Southern, UMB Financial, Waddell & Reed, Compass Minerals, DST, Great Plains Energy and Garmin.
Overall, stocks ended lower after a volatile day as investors position themselves for less economic stimulus from central banks.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 116 points to close at 15,122 Tuesday, a loss of 0.8 percent. The index moved up and down sharply during the day.
A key focus was a decision by the Bank of Japan to stand pat on stimulus. The Federal Reserve is also expected to slow its program.
The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 16 points to 1,626, a loss of 1 percent. The Nasdaq fell 36 points to 3,436, or 1.1 percent. The BATS 1000 fell 181.46 points, or 0.99 percent, to close at 18,225.92.
Lululemon fell after saying its CEO would leave.
Six stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was lighter than average at 3.3 billion shares.
Capitol Federal Financial fell 4 cents, or 0.34%, to close at $11.84.
Cerner Corp. fell 31 cents, or 0.31%, to close at $98.14.
Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 30 cents, or 0.67%, to close at $44.20.
Compass Minerals fell $1.50, or 1.72%, to close at $85.59.
DST Systems Inc. fell $1.29, or 1.90%, to close at $66.56.
Ferrellgas Partners L.P. was unchanged at $22.00.
Garmin Ltd. fell 55 cents, or 1.58%, to close at $34.35.
Great Plains Energy fell 30 cents, or 1.31%, to close at $22.58.
H&R Block Inc. fell 50 cents, or 1.67%, to close at $29.40.
Inergy L.P. fell 7 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $23.22.
Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 56 cents, or 1.43%, to close at $38.49.
Kansas City Southern fell 89 cents, or 0.81%, to close at $109.34.
Layne Christensen Co. fell 3 cents, or 0.15%, to close at $20.00.
O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 56 cents, or 0.50%, to close at $110.54.
Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 17 cents, or 2.37%, to close at $7.35.
UMB Financial Corp. fell 84 cents, or 1.57%, to close at $52.67.
Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. fell 68 cents, or 1.45%, to close at $46.38.
YRC Worldwide Inc. rose $1.06, or 5.33%, to close at $20.93.
