Appeal denied in Waldo rape case

Updated: 2013-06-12T03:10:23Z

The convictions and life sentences of the man dubbed the Waldo rapist were upheld Tuesday by a panel of the Missouri Court of Appeals.

Bernard Jackson is serving 18 consecutive life sentences for attacks on four women in 1983 and 1984.

The crimes went unsolved until 2010, when DNA testing not available at the time of the crimes was used to link Jackson, now 55, to the assaults. A Jackson County jury in 2011 found Jackson guilty of multiple counts of rape, sodomy and robbery.

He raised several issues on appeal, arguing that evidence was insufficient to prove that he used a deadly weapon during the crimes. He also raised issues about how jurors were selected and challenged the use of victim impact testimony at trial.

The court rejected all the arguments.

Jackson is also awaiting trial in Jackson County for other sex crimes that occurred in 2009 and 2010.
