A minor traffic accident kicked off a dispute that ended with the shooting death of two men at a block party over the weekend, Kansas City police said Monday.

Deon Johnson, 36, and Willard A. Brown, 47, were killed Saturday night at the large outdoor party near 58th Terrace and College Avenue.

A relative of Johnson was involved in the minor wreck with a parked car on the block, said Police Capt. Tye Grant, the department’s main spokesman.

“Things went downhill from there,” Grant said.

Johnson apparently became involved in the ensuing dispute. Brown’s involvement in the dispute was not known, Grant said.

Neighbors heard about 30 gunshots. Police said about 100 people were attending two parties on the block.

After officers arrived, the large crowd “was interfering with officers,” according to a police report, prompting officers to call for back-up, including tactical officers.

Police found both victims on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

The shooter apparently fled the scene. Police have not identified the shooter or determined whether there were multiple shooters. Police are looking for the other vehicle involved in the fender bender.
