A 16-year-old teen was swimming with friends across a cove at Lakewood Lakes when he slipped under the water and disappeared Saturday afternoon, Lees Summit police said.
He was identified as Emmanuel Palmer, of Raytown, a student at Raytown High School.
Emergency crews were called around 3:50 p.m. to the 200 block of N.W. Aspen Street, near Lake Drive. The Lees Summit Underwater Rescue and Recovery Unit located Palmers body about 6 p.m., said Sgt. Christopher Depue, a Lees Summit police spokesman.
A neighbor, Kathleen McKenna, said she was working in her yard when she heard the sirens.
I watched when the ambulance pulled up and a boy ran up from the shore crying so hard. I could hear him say, Hes still underwater! It was so horrible.
Nine police cruisers quickly arrived, she said.
The cove was as wide as a football field, she guessed. The boys were apparently trying to swim across it.
The victims mother, 23-year-old sister and father came and waited as recovery teams searched. Several neighbors offered their condolences to the distraught family and waited with them, McKenna said.
It was oh so sad on what had been a beautiful Summer day.
