The 28-bed adult acute care psychiatric unit at TMC’s Lakewood hospital in eastern Jackson County will close, leaving only the 50-bed psychiatric unit on Hospital Hill.
Marsha Morgan, chief operating officer for TMC Behavioral Health, said the change is being “driven by the reality of what has become the new normal in health care” — a quest to become more efficient in the changing cost reimbursement environment.
Morgan said that TMC will operate a 16-bed geriatric psychiatric unit at Lakewood but that all other adult psychiatric beds will be downtown.
About 40 nursing and staff positions are being affected by the change. Morgan said TMC expects to provide those Lakewood staff members “job opportunities in other open positions within the TMC system.”
The affected staff will be able to apply for available TMC positions and get in-house preference in consideration.
Morgan said the psychiatric unit consolidation is one part of a continuing reorganization at TMC. Like all hospitals, TMC is working to deal with new reimbursement schedules and other demands of the Affordable Care Act.
