A 16-year-old boy shot by Kansas City police on Monday has died, police said Tuesday.
They identified him as Tyler W. Wilkins of Kansas City.
Two police officers on patrol about 4 p.m. Monday saw Wilkins walking in the area of Smart and Wheeling avenues and recognized him as someone detectives wanted to speak with, according to police reports.
The officers pulled their patrol car up next to Wilkins and began talking to him as he walked. According to the report, when the officers parked their car, Wilkins took off running. As he ran, the officers saw him throw a bag on the ground.
Wilkins then pulled a gun from his front waistband and had it in his right hand, according to the police report. When he turned toward the officers, one of them fired, according to the report.
Wilkins was taken by ambulance to a hospital. He died Tuesday morning.
Police said the weapon he was carrying was recovered at the scene.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
