Kansas City police on Tuesday identified a man killed when his car slammed into a tree as Derek R. Rineman, 24, of Grandview.

Rineman was southbound in the 8700 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard about 2:40 a.m. Tuesday when he lost control and left the roadway. His car hit a wooden sign post and two light poles, splitting the concrete base of one pole. Police believe the impact partly threw Rineman from the car. He was not wearing his seat belt, police said. The car then slid into the tree, crushing Rineman.

Witnesses told police a front-seat passenger fled from the wreckage, leaving behind a deployed air-bag, blood evidence and his shoes, police said.

Shortly thereafter, residents near the 8800 block of Sycamore Avenue saw a shoeless man covered in blood running around. Officers could not find him. A woman in Raytown later called police after the suspected passenger showed up on her porch disoriented. He told police he didn’t remember what happened.
