Jackson County prosecutors on Friday charged three men in connection with a failed burglary that ended when the homeowner shot through her back door.

Kansas City police arrested the men at Research Medical Center, where they sought medical help for D’Shawn Marchbanks, 21, of Kansas City, who had been shot in the chest, according to court records.

According to the records, the homeowner told police she was alone about 12:05 p.m. Thursday when a car backed into her driveway in the 10600 block of Greenwood Road and a man she didn’t recognize rang her doorbell four times. She didn’t answer, the man returned to his car and she thought he was leaving.

Instead, she heard two car doors shut, then the gate to her backyard open. Two men appeared on her deck and one tried to open her back door. She retrieved her .38-caliber revolver.

She could see through her blinds that one of the men wore blue rubber gloves and was lifting his right leg to kick in her door. That’s when she fired one round through the door. She then heard two gunshots but was not hit.

Neighbors heard the shots and saw three men leave in a gray four-door car. The driver was wearing a red T-shirt, they told police.

At the hospital, about 12:26 p.m., police saw a gray four-door car with three men pull into the area where ambulances enter. The driver, wearing a red shirt, ran into the hospital to get help. Staff then went to the car and took the backseat passenger, later identified as Marchbanks, into the hospital for treatment.

Police arrested the other occupants of the car: Ronald R. Brown, 23, and Desmond C. Moore, 20, both of Kansas City. Prosecutors charged Marchbanks, Brown and Moore each with attempted burglary and unlawful use of a weapon.
