Theft of Overland Park school funds investigated

Updated: 2013-05-24T15:41:41Z

Overland Park police are investigating the theft of funds from the parent teacher organization of a Blue Valley elementary school.

A police spokesman said no arrests have been made in connection with the reported theft of about $30,000 from the PTO at Valley Park Elementary School, 12301 Lamar Avenue. Results of the investigation will be turned over to the Johnson County district attorney.

In a letter to school families, PTO co-presidents Jade Van Slyke and Ashley Cherafat, said that when they discovered money missing from the group’s bank account they immediately filed a report with police. Insurance may cover most of the loss, they said, and they will be reviewing the group’s accounting practices.

“The Valley Park PTO is disappointed and angry that money is missing from PTO funds that were intended to support Valley Park students,” they said in a written statement.
